Internet Certificate Web Portfolio Workshop
Class Description

Donya developed this workshop for students in the San Jose State University Professional Development Internet Business Certificate program to provide them with a unique opportunity to combine and use the skills and knowledge they acquired from other classes in the program in a simulated "real-world" context.

Simulating a Web design and development firm, students team up to develop web sites for real clients under real project constraints. The work they do on the project provides valuable development, client, project and client management experience, and a prototype Web site that they can include in their individual portfolios.

Specifically, students:

  • Become familiar with the various phases of web site design and development and various types of documents required to ensure a successful outcome for both the client and team

  • Interview clients to learn how to identify and evaluate their web development needs and objectives in light of their organizational or corporate goals

  • Learn how to form teams based on the mix of skills required to get the job done and support each other to overcome team weaknesses while increasing exposure to other skill areas

  • Evaluate and work with available content to create a meaningful site architecture and navigation scheme, and an appropriate design consistent with the clients' stated needs and objectives

  • Develop and coordinate production schedules, timelines, and project milestones as well as identify critical decision points and define parameters of working relationships

  • Manage client expectations and communications throughout the development process, including when and how to solicit/receive appropriate feedback; when and how to give appropriate feedback; understanding different work styles, relationships, and priorities; and resolving or moving through conflicts

  • Learn to impute a market value for a Web site based on calculating the resources that went into creating and developing it

Every effort is made to ensure that students have an opportunity to work on skill areas of interest, and at a minimum, each team will complete a basic web site design prototype (if not an actual finished site) that can be included in their portfolios.

Prerequisite: Previous experience with HTML, Web design , and at least one Web authoring tool. Basic knowledge or understanding of CGI and Web client/server issues is not required but preferred.
