Integrated HTML, Web Design, and Graphics
Class Description

This class combines the essence of the individual Introductory and Intermediate HTML classes with the wisdom of the Web Design class, and adds a primer for creating and optimizing Web graphics, to form a mini-crash course in Web design and production.

Offered as three one-day sessions or six evening sessions spread out over the course of 3-4 weeks, this class was developed by Donya for the San Jose State University Professional Development Center's Web Design Achievement Certificate program.

It is designed to quickly bring students up to speed on how to design and create a user-friendly Web site of their own. Using a combination of lecture, demonstration and hands-on exercises, students apply what they learn in each class to individual projects of their own.

Specifically, students:

  • Use hands-on exercises to learn enough HTML to create a functional Web site prototype and templates for various types of page layouts.

  • Gain an understanding of the relationship of content to design and the basic principles of user interface design required for creating a user-friendly site.

  • See examples of good, bad, and mediocre information design and discover the true difference.

  • Get to know the challenges of designing for different audiences and how to make the best choices for their intended audience.

  • Learn the basics of Web graphics production, the tools available for creating and optimizing them, and how to use Photoshop to prototype their design ideas.

Students are expected to come to class with a Web site project they are working on or would like to work on and will be required to work on their projects intensively for the duration of the class.

Previous experience with HTML or Web design are not required but would be helpful.
